We are asking for project funding to help us support disadvantaged children 8yrs + inc children in care through our ReStart program. This grant will help the most vulnerable children in our community.
Sorry this project was unsuccessful, we did not reach our fundraising goal.
We are an independent charity just outside of Cirencester that works with CYP struggling with mental health challenges and not responding to talk based therapies. This project funding will help us to support the most vulnerable and disadvantaged CYP in our local community. - Fully fund 10 ReStart programmes a 5 day intensive 1-to-1 equine-assisted intervention with excellent evidence of efficacy - Offer unlimited top-up sessions to all participants - Enable us to offer weekly supported volunteering - Run Non verbal toolbox training for parents and/or carers What stands us apart from other equine interventions is that we have the research and evidence to show that the skills they learn do stick long term in everyday life. Our referral analysis from Bournemouth University demonstrates a gap in provision and need - our participants are on average involved with 2-3 agencies and have 4.2 serious mental health problems.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
Our ReStart program enables CYP who are unable to progress in conventional, talk-based services to access a specialist action-based service utilising horses to teach crucial psycho-social skills. Our programme is carefully designed to teach 8 core skills focused on emotional regulation, thinking skills and communication. A project we ran with the help of the BBC Children in Need showed a 23% average gain across these 8 skills for children and young people. Our Theory of Change, published by New Philanthropy Capital and peer reviewed by MoJ, evidenced the link between these 8 skills and 4 intermediate outcomes which we check up on 2 months post course: 1. positive changes in identity 2. improved attendance/engagement in education 3. reduced problem behaviours, 4. improved relationships. In our follow-up two months after our previous CiN project 85% of the CYP showed an improvement in intermediate outcome and 4. 71% showed improvements in outcome 3 and 58% in outcome 2.
Steps to get it done:
'Improving self-belief and positive changes in identity' We set “just right” challenges in which children struggle but crucially are ALWAYS coached to success in tricky, intricate tasks with the horses. These short episodes of learning each last about 10-20 minutes, with relentless success repeated over and over again for a whole week. It is clear to the children that success comes from mastering new skills in calmness, focus, perseverance. It is not founded just on “feeling great,” they actually learn to “BE great” and they know it! To culminate, they work with horses at liberty (no ropes), performing seemingly impossible tasks. This feels absolutely magical and has a profound impact on the way they see themselves and their abilities. At the end of every ReStart children plan a demonstration of everything they have learned in the week. One of our CYP this year, Amelia asked if we could share hers to help us help other young people https://youtu.be/uhkbcLk--Xk
