By International Community Organisation of Sunderland
With your help, we want to build a free outdoor gym in Backhouse Park in Sunderland to enable children to take up various forms of recreation, matching their age in a healthy environment.
Knowing the positive effects that being in nature may have on one's mental health and general well-being, ICOS built and maintained a relationship with the community around the public park. In past years we have successfully restored safe, attractive and accessible spaces for kids and families. We learned through the process that giving people a chance to spend more time outdoors not only addresses the need for physical activities but, helps to overcome social barriers. We believe there is always room for development opportunities for sports and recreation in the local green area. At this moment, at the park, there is a playground intended for toddlers and preschool children. We would like to create recreational space for older kids to include them in outdoor play and activities. For this purpose, with your support, we want to buy The Primary School All Stars Package includes three of the most popular pieces of children's fitness equipment.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
Outdoor gym exercise helps kids develop balance, coordination and social interaction skills. It is a great way to get kids outdoors and active. Open-air activities have plenty of benefits, such as increasing energy levels, improving mental well-being and acquiring healthy habits among young people. According to Forbes, these days, kids spend an average of 7h a day in front of electronics. That's why it is important to rekindle the love of sports from a young age. Getting more exercise will help build self-esteem, lower the chances of depression and help prevent obesity. Kids who are active throughout childhood are usually more likely to engage in regular exercise later in life. Everyday physical activities lower stress, improve the immune system and concentration and are great for a better mood.
Steps to get it done:
The International Community Organisation of Sunderland is a registered charity based in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear. We run various environmental projects. Through our work, we delivered workshops, events, training, and volunteering opportunities under the East Rangers Project.

We have great news at the start of the year! Our crowdfunding for the building of a children's gym at Backhouse Park was a huge success! Thanks to the generosity of donors, we not only managed to raise the full amount needed to build the gym but a little over that, so we will be able to hold an event in the park to celebrate the opening and leave some for maintenance. In total we raised £7,257. A big thank you to all the donors, a special thank you to the friends and supporters of ICOS and Backhouse Park who got our fundraising off to a great start and who supported our project from the very beginning, Sunderland City Council for donating £1,000 from Crowdfund Sunderland fund and £2,000 from Public Health Fund, National Lottery - Community Fund for donating £2,000 and NHS North East & North Cumbria for donating £2,000 from Integrated Care Board Sunderland. Thank you so much, through this wonderful contribution the children will soon be able to enjoy a new outdoor activity.
Brilliant news, thanks everyone!
