Golden Garbage

Trash collection has become a ubiquitous and unsightly feature on our streets. Why not camouflage the function with heritage flora? Golden Garbage brings the Arts and Crafts movement to street level.

Sorry this project was unsuccessful, we did not reach our fundraising goal.

The idea

The Turnpike Art Group have been given special permission by Veolia Environmental Services to enhance a local trade waste unit - introducing the genius of William Morris into an urban landscape. Our proposal is to adapt his Golden Lily (1899) wallpaper design, and apply this to a section of wall, simultaneously overlaying this beautiful motif onto the large shop waste container which stands before it. This project adheres to our core TAG ethos of celebrating and re-introducing heritage artefacts within the urban environment.

What we'll deliver

  • Paint and stencil an Arts and Crafts heritage design onto two unsightly urban structures.

Why it's a great idea

Our aim is twofold - to soften the impact of waste management within a residential street, and also to introduce a sense of visual enhancement, by incorporating the work of one of the single most influential designers of the nineteenth century - William Morris.

With The William Morris Gallery located in nearby Walthamstow, our desire is to introduce an element of arts education, as we diffuse the visual impact of rubbish into a positive experience.

Call it Waste management with wallpaper. Or Golden Garbage.

Steps to get it done

  • Careful application by brush and spray can over a number of days
  • Creation of a series of large-scale, one-off paper stencils
