The idea

We want to create three bursary pots to provide arts mentoring for low income, early career artists, these pots will give them access to rehearsal space, mentoring, access needs, print costs and any other costs they need to get their work off the ground.

We also want to improve our economic accessibility. We started a free ticket fund programme in 2023 which allowed low income people and service users of our partner charities, free entry to any events of their choosing. We wanted to make sure the free tickets were funded to make sure our artists were still paid fairly for their work. We would love to continue this initiative in 2024 and allow vulnerable and low income people access to great arts and culture that reflects their experiences.

Finally, we would like to increase our physical access by investing in equipment allowing us to stream the festival online. We want this to be high quality to ensure those who have to watch at home get the best experience possible.

What we'll deliver

  • Three bursaries for low-income, early career artists
  • A community free ticket fund for our partner charities and for low-income audiences
  • Hire and invest in equipment to stream the festival online

Why it's a great idea

Further engagement with the arts for women, non-binary and trans people in Brighton and the surrounding areas. We also work closely with our partner charities, survivors network and Brighton LGBTQ Switchboard to engage with vulnerable people and increase their engagement with their community and give them safe, creative spaces to express and enjoy themselves in.

By offering bursaries to early-career, low income artists we are increasing arts opportunities for local artists. Many artists from the festival have gone on to work in London and to develop larger scale work after spring boarding at FemFest.

Increasing our technical capabilities and enhancing our streaming of the festival will allow us to engage with physically disabled people who cannot usually access the festival. We want to ensure they have the best experience possible and by investing in excellent technology and technicians, we can make this dream a reality.
