The idea
Music has an incredible power to heal and inspire, which is why we need your help to fund our project. We want to bring together 50 young refugees living in Leicester, Bristol & Birmingham to rehearse and perform a specially commissioned piece of music. These rehearsals will culminate in a concert in Leicester Cathedral on the 3rd of August as part of National Refugee Week. We want to bring the participants together for a week's course alongside European Youth Music’s orchestra. To enable the young refugees to attend this course we need funding for their transport to the course, the residential fees and support staff. Whilst on the music course, the young refugees will be interacting with other young refugees from other countries, young musicians from all over the world and be guided by professional musicians. We are also commissioning a new piece for orchestra and choir, which will take inspiration from the refugees and their journeys. This will be the climax of the final concert.

Why it's a great idea
Our project is unique as we will combine regular rehearsals with the intensity of a week-long residential course alongside a high quality youth orchestra to create something of a truly high standard. The course will enable the young refugees to mix with young refugees from other countries who are living in England (as well as the other young musicians on the course). This project will enable them to enjoy singing in a high quality choir with people who might have had similar experiences. Being involved in this course will allow them to celebrate their own cultures whilst assimilating themselves into British culture. It will also help the orchestral participants learn from people from hugely different backgrounds. We all know that music has the power to heal. This residential course will give them the opportunity to immerse themselves in music for a whole week; bringing far more good than a normal, short rehearsal.
Steps to get it done
- Confirm residential places on the music course, concert venue and arrange transport to the course
- Communication plan to all parents, foster parents and carers of young refugee participants about course
- Confirm the final plans for the European Youth Music Week with the addition of the refugee choir
- Tailor the composition to include a symphony orchestra at the concert
Your money will help get the refugees to the course, pay for the room and board and ensure they can make the most of what we know will be a life changing experience.
