The idea
Communities feel safe when everyone respects each other.
Our project will empower Chichester City communities to work together to take action against driving speeds which threaten our sense of safety, and encourage everyone using our streets to consider their impact on others.
We will purchase two Speed Indicator Devices (SIDs), which measure speeds and collect data, so we can quantify the problem. Working with relevant authorities (including West Sussex County Council Highways, Chichester City Council and Chichester Police) and our communities, we will discover what driving speeds are being experienced where and their impacts on local residents and other street users. Our evidence and teamwork will help make our streets safer for everyone: people, pets, wildlife, however we travel.
This fundraiser is for one of the two SIDs.
What we'll deliver
- 1 Speed Indicator Device (SID) in different places in Chichester on different weeks
Why it's a great idea
- ability to respond to residents' concerns about unsafe driving speeds with practical action;
- detailed data collected on driving speeds to understand what speeds feel unsafe to other road users, and where, and to inform further action;
- safer driving encouraged - the SIDs thank drivers for driving within the speed limit, display the speed driven to all road users, and ask speeding drivers to slow down;
- increased public awareness of the impacts of speed on our communities, through community conversation and publicity;
- ultimately, as part of a suite of other actions, to increase community safety and independence, particularly for more vulnerable road users (people, pets and wildlife)
Steps to get it done
- Standard Form of Consent (as amended) completed with West Sussex County Council
- First SID (and supporting accessories) ordered
- Locations identified for deployment, permission from WSCC and, if relevant, from SSE
- Volunteers recruited (if required by Management Plan)
- First SID set up and deployed
- First data downloaded and analysed
- Community communication of operation and results
- Management Plan reviewed to identify what is working well and any changes needed for it to work better
- Second SID ordered, set up and deployed
- Reduced speeds embedded as a result of SID operation, data and subsequent action
