The idea
We aim to address social isolation, mental health and enhance a sense of belonging. The Community Shed provides a supportive environment where people can form friendships engage in meaningful conversations and participate in practical activities. This space is particularly beneficial those who are retired, unemployed or have experienced significant life changes, offering a sense of purpose and community. The Community Shed encourages intergenerational exchange and community engagement. Regular workshops and sessions are held covering topics like DIY skills, mental health awareness and personal development often led by volunteers. Connecting people enhances well-being and fosters inclusivity.
Following initial funding to buy and convert a container, we now require additional funding to purchase tools, additional storage space and improved electrical outlets to cater for our ever expanding groups.
What we'll deliver
- Purchase tools
- Purchase additional wood storage
- Additional power points
Why it's a great idea
This project addresses critical community needs such as social isolation, mental health challenges, and low community engagement. Social isolation affects many, leading to loneliness and poor mental health. Mental health issues often lack adequate support and personal development opportunities. Additionally, there is a need for increased community engagement, especially among diverse and underrepresented groups.
The project benefits:
• Men (retirees, unemployed): Provides companionship, purpose, and mental well-being through the Men’s Shed.
• Women and Young People: Fosters intergenerational exchange and gender inclusivity at the Community Shed.
• Individuals with Disabilities and Health Issues: Ensures accessible facilities for meaningful participation.
• Elderly Individuals: Offers opportunities to stay active, share skills, and combat loneliness.
• People with Mental Health Challenges: Delivers support through mental health workshops and personal development.
Steps to get it done
- New equipment purchased and in use by groups
- Additional electrical sockets installed
- Additional storage in place
The Community Shed an integral part of the Community Wellbeing Service at The Churn Project which is currently funded by the National Lottery. Additional funding is crucial as the current grant does not fully cover development, ongoing operational needs or core costs.
Local businesses and organisations have provided valuable contributions towards equipment and building work and have committed to ongoing support. This has been essential for maintaining and enhancing our services.
This funding will help cover additional costs ensuring the long-term sustainability and expansion of our Community Shed and boosting our capacity to effectively support the community.
