The idea
Volunteer operated, Chichester Canal is a well-supported and much valued asset to the local community and provides highly regarded recreational and tourism opportunities to the wider area.
Many people use the towpath, which provides much needed peace and calmness, for exercise to maintain and improve their health and wellbeing. Paddleboarders and kayakers are on the water enjoying the fresh air, boosting their mental health and connecting with nature either alone or with the family.
But the Canal Banks, which are the very foundation of the Canal, are being eroded and require specialist repairs. This funding will cover Phase One of the repairs, which will be addressed in order of need, to ensure the safety of all users. We will keep people up to date with the progress made.
It is part of a bigger campaign (costing around £200,000) working with our specialist experts over the next 2 years. Securing Phase One funding will help us unlock funding from other sources.

Why it's a great idea
We need your help to raise these funds to keep your canal safe, secure and enjoyable for you, your family and friends now and in the future.
In 2019 we welcomed 15,000 people on boat trips and 35,000 people to our waterside Café – every single one of those visitors would benefit from repaired Canal Banks. We welcome such a variety of people – local canoe clubs, children from special schools, families learning to paddleboard, people seeking peace and tranquillity, those wanting space for mental and physical health, anglers, those accessing the city via walking or cycling, children feeding the ducks, dog walkers and residents from nearby retirement flats. We’re applying for grants, and Chichester City Council has allocated us £10,000, subject to us securing funds from other councils. Your pledge could make the difference
We know there are so many more people who support the Canal – as volunteers, as members and on social media.
Steps to get it done
- Repairing the Canal Banks - Phase One - spring 2021
We recently received verbal permission from the council for these works to be carried out, but are still awaiting written confirmation. In the extremely unlikely case that this permission is not secured, no money will be transferred from backers to the project delivery manager.
Contrary to popular belief we receive no regular funding from local authorities – everything we do at the canal is wholly self-funded.
