Kirkland and Catterall Memorial Hall serves the rural villages of Churchtown and Catterall. Each year we come together at Churchtown and District Childrens Festival to enjoy a parade and activities as a community. The venue for most of this activity is Kirkland and Catterall Memorial Hall which is 100 years old this year. It was built as a war memorial by the community just after the first world war and has been run by volunteers from the community ever since. The Hall serves a wide range of people and activities. It is enjoyed by young and old.
We want to celebrate 100 years through creative workshop activity, bringing together a heritage display and brass band concert all free for the community to enjoy.
What we'll deliver:
- Creative workshop such as performance/arts
- Heritage display including display boards, photography and print
- Brass band concert
- Tree planting
Why it's a great idea:
All the events will be free of charge and enable more people to enjoy cultural activities in our rural community. Being a small community our history is not well known and we want to share the heritage with those new to the area.
This is not just about looking backwards but looking forward to the future and our tree planting around the Memorial Hall will ensure the environment for future generations
Steps to get it done:
- Workshop 27/5/23
- Concert 27/5/23
- Heritage exhibition 19/8/23
- Tree planting autumn 2023
We will work with local artists and musicians as well as local heritage experts. We will invite everyone to share their memories and photographs of the Memorial Hall and Children's Festival over the years
