Bring Back the Butterflies

Camden Butterfly Trust By Camden Butterfly Trust

This will be the first garden in our wildlife habitat creation programme. Actually on the pavement of a busy thoroughfare, it has already attracted a great deal of interest

Camden Delivery stage

£110
pledged of £25,956

Sorry this project was unsuccessful, we did not reach our fundraising goal.

With an emphasis on butterfly and bee conservation, the Camden Butterfly Trust's aim is to establish a network of wildlife-friendly butterfly gardens throughout the London borough of Camden. Being the first of many, this modest garden will be the vanguard of our wildlife habitat creation programme.

What we'll deliver:

  • await the arrival of the butterflies
  • weed the garden removing any nonorganic debris
  • add fresh topsoil to facilitate the roots of the shrubs
  • build a barrier around the garden to contain the material to be added
  • each layer will be mixed in using a cultivator
  • plant the larval food plants
  • plant the shrubs and flowers that will produce the nectar
  • the weeding will continue until the soil has been cleansed
  • then spread layers of sharp sand, compost and leaf mould
  • wait for all this to settle and the inevitable appearance of the weeds

Why it's a great idea:

I have been campaigning for our butterfly conservation gardens for over five years and have met hundreds of people. The response has always been 100% in favour.

Steps to get it done:

  • A cultivator will be used to incorporate the various materials.
  • Labourers will be hired to spread the various materials on the garden.
  • Volunteers will be invited to get involved - but not with the heavy work.

This colourful, fragrant wildlife garden will not only provide a variety of species with all they need for their continued survival, but will encourage social integration and engender a sense of well-being in the local human population.
