The idea
The play, written, directed and composed by award winning Jude Alderson, will be realised by professionals and people from the community. In tandem to the play, we will run workshops inspired by circus and music hall skills, mask and costume making and improvisations using C19th language. This will develop community relationships, confidence and teaching new skills and improve our understanding of the rich complex English language.
Our two heroines, Flora and Maud, epitomise the spirit of these raw and savage times. Flora, a Soldier's Woman, following a battalion, heads for the Crimea. Runaway Maud witnesses Flora being violently attacked by her lover, Jack. Maud swoops in, and with blood on their hands the two women escape. Flora dresses in the soldier's coat of her ex-lover for disguise and protection. These two fugitives discover the world of music hall artists, cross-dressers, rogues and pick-pockets. Through the transformatory power of theatre, they find an inspiring family.
