The idea
Our project is to transform an existing area from a run down space which can be the focus for anti-social behaviour such as arson, to a safe, welcoming, green space for picnics and play which families and young people can enjoy together.
We will update the existing sports courts and open out this space to create a new picnic area with large picnic tables and play equipment for toddlers.
We will improve the paths and make use of the existing pergolas & bridge with insect-friendly planting where children can watch butterflies, bees & other bugs. The space will be a safe area where people can enjoy the outdoors and come together socially. There will be spaces to sit and spaces to play. The area will be open access for people to enjoy all year round.
We know how important being outside and being with others is, this new space will enable people of all ages to do that, creating a new attractive green area that is good for people & the environment.
What we'll deliver
- Install 5 large picnic tables
- Improve the access and planting around the picnic area
- Create clear and accessible path to the area
- Repair and improve the sports court & install new basketball hoops
- Install 2 small play items for toddlers to enjoy (repurposing existing safe play surface)
Why it's a great idea
People living near the centre will have a new space they can use to meet safely outside with friends and family.
Young people will be able to use the space to meet with friends and play games on the sports court.
Local children will be able to play football, basketball or other games which just need a bit of space.
The environment will benefit from improved, insect-friendly planting which in turn will reduce carbon emissions.
Our bees will have new flowers to collect nectar from, which in turn will help our partners Pure Buzzin, with their Community Bee-keeping project.
There will be opportunities for groups and individuals to volunteer to help maintain the area longer term.
