The idea
Our project will deliver a free four-week summer sports tournament programme for young people in Preston who are most affected by the cost-of-living crisis. Running throughout the school holidays, the project will provide daily structured sports sessions that build towards weekly tournaments and celebration events. Activities will include skills challenges, small-sided games and inclusive competitions designed for all abilities.
The programme will use a youth work-led approach to support confidence, teamwork, resilience and wellbeing, while offering a safe and positive space during a period when affordable provision is limited. Food will be provided, and young people will receive medals and certificates to recognise participation and achievement.
By removing financial barriers, increasing activity during the summer holidays and offering consistent engagement, the project will help reduce inactivity, prevent disengagement and support families facing financial pressure.
What we'll deliver
- 40 sports development sessions across 4 weeks
- 4 end of week tournaments
- Medals and certificates
Why it's a great idea
The project will bring significant benefits to young people, families and the wider community in Preston by providing free, structured sports activities during the summer holidays, when financial pressure and inactivity are highest. Young people will benefit from increased physical activity, improved fitness and better mental wellbeing, alongside opportunities to build confidence, resilience, teamwork and positive relationships through inclusive tournaments and skills-based activities.
Families will benefit from free access to safe, supervised provision, reducing the cost of childcare and activities during the school holidays. Food provision will help ease financial pressure and support young people’s health and wellbeing. The project will provide routine and positive engagement, reducing isolation and the risk of disengagement or anti-social behaviour.
Weekly tournaments, medals and celebration events will give young people a sense of achievement and belonging
