As a volunteer group we are well placed to respond to the changing needs of the families we support, and the emergence of our Wellbeing Wednesdays are a result of this.
Many of our families are experiencing emotional burnout. We find that our parent carers are uncomfortable talking in a support group and would rather be active.
We will visit a local café to provide an opportunity to chat together while enjoying the comfort of food.
Our essential items will be offered in a social setting, providing snacks and company. There will be a range of high cost household goods such as washing powder, personal hygiene and cleaning products. We will also have a selection of seasonally themed items to enhance the event.
What we'll deliver:
- 24 organised walks with a café visit
- 6 Cost of Living events
- Social Evening (funding dependent)
Why it's a great idea:
We are providing a regular package of support for parent carers. We know from lived experience that feeling supported better places carers to deal with their daily role more effectively.
Being a parent carer is overwhelming. You are thrust into a situation where you are constantly fighting for the rights of your child. Home life can be incredibly stressful as we navigate the highs and lows, while questioning every decision we make.
By coming together to enjoy the out doors, we are creating a safe space for parents to share their worries and concerns helping to reduce isolation. But, we are also providing a space to celebrate the achievements together.
The practicality of caring for a disabled child is likely to cost more then a regular family in terms of the Cost of Living crisis. Our families are at home more often, requiring heating, extra washing and drying, with some needing to power equipment.
Our way of easing this struggle is to provide high cost household cleaning items.
Steps to get it done:
- On raising £250 we can buy products for 1 Cost of Living event
- On reaching funds of a further £720 we would access a Walk Leader training course for 6 people
- On raising £1500, all our Cost of Living events will be paid for
We believe our parent carers are best placed to provide vital care to their disabled child when they are supported themselves. Our parents, and mums in particular, are often the glue that holds a family together in stressful circumstances.
We want to create resilience within our families by showing that Carers matter.
While our carers are enjoying new walks and cafes, we hope to create confidence within our families to visit these places together. In turn, this will help to support and advertise local business' and work towards breaking down barriers.
