The idea
Rising Sun delivers group programmes for women who are living with or have experienced domestic abuse. These groups take place in several locations across Kent and help women understand and make sense of the abuse they have suffered.
Many women who need our support have young children and would not be able to attend the groups if childcare is not provided. Each group has on average 10 women taking part and 6-8 children aged under 5 in need of childcare.
This funding will pay for a crèche at 5 different 10 week group programmes running during Autumn 2022. And will mean children aged 0-5 years can be cared for by trained professionals whilst their mothers have the time and space to recover from living with domestic abuse.
What we'll deliver
- Crèche worker and toys for 1st 10 week group programme
- Crèche worker and toys for 2nd 10 week group programme
- Crèche worker and toys for 3rd 10 week group programme
- Crèche worker and toys for 4th 10 week group programme
- Crèche worker and toys for 5th 10 week group programme
Why it's a great idea
This crèche will support domestic abuse survivors by providing a safe and fun space for young children from Kent whilst their mothers attend support groups. These families have lived with domestic abuse so it is vital both the child and mother feel confident that they are safe and looked after whilst at the groups.
During the 2 hour group sessions children will have activities, arts, crafts and toys whilst their mothers are educated and empowered to:
- understand the effects of domestic abuse on themselves and their children
- recognise potential future abusers
-gain self-esteem and the confidence to improve the quality of their and their children's lives
- build a peer to peer support network with one another
Steps to get it done
- Completion of first 10 week group programme
- Completion of second 10 week group programme
- Completion of third 10 week group programme
- Completion of fourth 10 week group programme
- Completion of fifth 10 week group programme
The learnings gained from the groups form an ongoing resource for women after the course has finished. One domestic abuse survivor who took part in the Family Now group programme and whose young baby was cared for by crèche said:
"It was the best thing I ever did. I learnt about how abuse was still affecting me and my daughter and that we needed time to recover. It really helped me to be self-aware and to reflect.
I met so many amazing women through Family Now, showing me there are still people out there who I can trust. And thanks to Rising Sun I have that network of people who I can still go to."
