The idea

This project is to manufacture a new tender tank, to carry the coal and water for Class B1 steam locomotive no. 61264, which is under the custodianship of the Thompson B1 Locomotive Trust (TBLT).

The new tender tank is part of the overhaul of the loco, which is necessary to return it to operational condition; this will enable the TBLT to fulfil its charitable objectives, which are to preserve, operate and exhibit for the public benefit, for educational and instructional purposes, loco 61264.

What we'll deliver

  • A new tender tank will be manufactured and fitted to Class B1 steam locomotive no. 61264; a major part of its overhaul.

Why it's a great idea

The return to operational condition of steam locomotive no. 61264 will address the need for historically accurate, efficient, relatively straightforward and appropriately-sized steam locomotives to pull trains on UK heritage railways and for pulling charter trains on the UK National Network, both of which make a significant contribution to the UK economy, as well as to the wellbeing of many people and communities.

The TBLT works predominantly in the East Midlands, and in particular with the Great Central Railway (GCR), whose visitors, supporters and wider neighbours will benefit from the operation of 1264 in a historically-appropriate setting.

Not only will the overhaul of 61264 contribute positively to the overall conservation and celebration of British industrial heritage, it will also have a benefit to society in terms of bringing volunteering opportunities, a chance to learn new skills, and enhancing social interactions.
