The idea
Based on the idea of a traditional carnival 'mas camp', workshops will take place outdoors in Maxilla Gardens and will cater to all ages and abilities. Instead of creating costumes we will be dressing one of the key 'junctions' along the carnival route.
The artwork will be created using willow and wet-strength tissue paper enabling the structures to be very light and durable. We have chosen this medium to work with as it is possible to achieve differentiated outcomes with people of all ages and abilities. It is also renewable and affordable.
We will lead in creating the structures and participants will take part in the design, construction and decoration.
A key aspect of this project is that the workshops will open Carnival up to children and adults who otherwise may not participate, and the completed installation is intended to enhance the spectacle that is carnival whilst empowering local residents to make a positive contribution to their local environment.
What we'll deliver
- Three weeks of free workshops in an underused park catering for all ages and abilities
- A unique art installation at a key junction of Notting Hill Carnival seen by an audience of millions
Why it's a great idea
This project has been tried and tested 2 years in a row. It brings life to Maxilla Gardens and provides a brilliant opportunity for young and old to get together to learn how to create willow sculptures, and to build on community and friendship. It also gives an opportunity to be involved in Carnival to people who are not able to attend due to abilities or disabilities. Over the past two years we've enjoyed participants between the ages of 0 and 92. By working with North Kensington Library we have been given the added opportunity to highlight how important this building is to our community. Participants will shape the look of the final installation and will have the pleasure of seeing their work displayed before an audience of tens of thousands of carnival goers.
Steps to get it done
- Finalise designs collaborating with carnival artists, volunteers and community groups
- Launch the project at the press launch of Notting Hill Carnival
- Begin 3 weeks of daily workshops in Maxilla Gardens
