Offering tailored 12-week Equine Facilitated Learning programmes to support the physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing of the young people, aged 5 to 18, who are lacking statutory funding.
In our EFL sessions, we engage with the horses on the ground, rather than riding. We work with the horse's sensitivity and receive immediate feedback to help the children focus and control their emotions. By partnering young people with our horses, we provide a unique and therapeutic experience allowing emotional healing in a safe and supportive environment. Example of activities include: Grounding exercises: Mindfulness techniques for present moment connection. Horse grooming: Teaching care and fostering responsibility. Leading exercises: Promoting leadership and communication. Obstacle courses: Encouraging problem-solving and teamwork. Mirror activities: Non-verbal communication awareness. Boundaries and respect: Emphasising mutual respect. Emotional awareness: Identifying and expressing emotions. Equine-assisted mindfulness: Sensory experience focus. Trust-building exercises: Fostering security and connection. Affirmation and reinforcement: Positive behaviour encourage

Steps to get it done:
Why is this project needed: In Gloucestershire, in 2022: • 25% of children face social, emotional, and mental health challenges. • 21% have speech, language, and communication needs. Without early intervention and support, children with additional needs are lacking crucial opportunities for growth and development. These vulnerable children not only have limited support and resources but are also experiencing multiple Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE’s). Tragically, 10.8% of them endure regular bullying, leading to a significant decline in their mental wellbeing. To ascertain the need for our work, we conducted an evaluation in collaboration with local schools. Our survey findings indicated that a significant portion of children in primary schools (23%) and secondary schools (19%) are considered ‘at-risk’ and require referral to our programme, highlighting a clear demand for interventions supporting youth wellbeing.
