We're a group of forty five Young Farmers, based at Surrey Docks Farm, fundraising for essential tools and resources to maintain and care for our wildlife garden to support local nature.

This Winter the wildlife garden at Surrey Docks Farm is being completely renovated to improve the area for wildlife and enable visitors the chance to peep in and learn from new signage we, the Young Farmers, are designing. We now need support with tools and resources to enable us to maintain the space for the long term. We're asking for your help to purchase new wheelbarrows, shovels, waders and pond rakes. This will limit sharing of resources - increasing our efficiency and reducing risks and will give us the opportunity to take ownership of our renovated wildlife garden, learning new skills as we maintain the space and care for the wildlife that live and visit here.

What we'll deliver:

  • 45 Young Farmers (aged 8-13) will gain new conservation skills and take an active role in improving their local area.
  • Wildlife Garden provides a home for nature in the city, supporting 2 of Southwark's priority species: sparrows & frogs.

Why it's a great idea:

Our Young Farmers have highlighted the need for more tools in order to tend this recently renovated space and the Farm is keen to respond to their feedback. But in this challenging year the charity just doesn't have the funds to invest in resources. If successful this project will meet a need identified by young people and will enable them to get actively involved in local conservation work. They will also each gain an AQA accredited module to demonstrate the new skills they'll learn in caring for the space. The maintenance of the Farm's Wildlife Garden will ensure the space remains a suitable home for many species, including two priority species listed in Southwark's Nature Action Plan, the house sparrow and frog.

Steps to get it done:

  • Purchasing the tools and resources requested by the Young Farmers

Overfunding

This project is enabled for overfunding. If the project hits its funding goal before the end of the campaign period, any extra funds raised will be spent (in order of priority) on:

  • Buy more resources including gloves, lopers and hand saws.
  • Buy webcams to provide views on to the pond and bird feeders, for Young Farmers to view when at home and/or if lockdowns prevent them coming on site.
