Young & Free is a charity that is run by, and for, people with physical and/or sensory disabilities. Our aims are: to enhance quality of life, provide companionship for isolated disabled people and support families caring for young disabled people at home. We assist disabled people aged 16 to 25 years throughout Bristol who have limited social opportunities due to their disability by offering a variety of social activities and events aimed at overcoming isolation and social exclusion and promote positive mental health and well-being through support and activities we offer - we are supoported by a team of volunteers known as befriending champions. They provide social and emotional support during our events and provide encouragment for our members to get involved - it can sometimes be as simple as taking the time to sit with somene and have a chat bu for our members it means so much and offers them some much needed socialising time

What we'll deliver:

  • social integration
  • equal opertunities for the disabled and non disabled young people in Bristol
  • a range of activities and events

Why it's a great idea:

Our project has changed lives! For many of our members before they joined the group they had no social life outside the family home - school and college can be a very lonely place for a person with disabilities - our aim of Young and Free is to provide opportunities and activities for disabled people where they can meet disabled and non-disabled people who they can build life-long friendships with and help people with their confidence and self-esteem in a non-judgemental, safe environment

Steps to get it done:

  • group set up in 2005
  • achieved charity status in 2007
  • Bristol diversity award winner in the disability organisation category 2018

We receive no government funding and are totally reliant on the generosity of individuals and organisations in order to provide our service
