Yorkswood School have taken the unprecedented step to run a community building next to the school. We have also taken on a community development worker who is experienced with working with parents and young people and tackling issues relating to parenting, behaviour, SEN, deprivation, domestic abuse and more. The school is building a local network of volunteers who are starting clubs that include play and stay, youth club, DJ studio (for which we have part funding) and other sporting and arts clubs that will utilise school spaces. We need equipment and supplies to support the above.

Why it's a great idea:

The area is deprived (double the national unemployment levels) and lacks facilities. It is recognised by the Multiple-Indices of Deprivation as one of the most 10% deprived areas in England. There are known issues around domestic violence, drugs and general ASB. Many local young people are deprived of access to regular activities to enrich their lives. These include sports-based, arts-based and other social inclusion activities. We have a partnership of will people and organisations who wish to add capacity to the area. These include health and wellbeing partners, employment and skills specialists, youth groups and other public sector / third-sector organisations. We also have match funding potential from a recording artist that was born in the area. The school is being rebuilt and there will be access for the community. Now is a great time to invest in the future of people within Kingshurst.
