Supporting the Havering community to rebuild and prosper coming out of the Coronavirus crisis.
YAYmates is a grassroots social network of creatives living in and around Havering. We founded the network in June when we saw the huge need for connectivity of creatives in the borough to support eachother during trying times. The network grew incredibly quickly, with over 100 members joining in the past month alone, with many messages expressing how the group is something that members had been looking for, for a long time. Our members are looking for work, local exhibition, social connection, collaboration, online and physical networking, business support and 'inspirational' outings. Having only planned a couple of socially distanced events, we are conscious that we need more resources to be able respond to this growing need and range of support. We would like to raise enough money through SpaceHive to be able to responsively organise more events, meetings and support mechanisms over one year to cater for our large and diverse network of creatives - catalysing local creation!
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
We will primarily be able to support hundreds of creative Havering residents who are artists. Including the support of their: - mental health & wellbeing through social connection (social networking) - financial wellbeing through local opportunities and benevolent fund for cultural activities - cultural and creative business education - artistic development through workshops and guidence - access to a collaborative artist network By supporting artistic practise and guiding them on creating work in the area - it will allow local artists to create more artwork locally, and to improve our Havering creative landscape for all residents to enjoy. By supporting creatives to get 'back into work' post-covid-19 we will be supporting our local economy. We will be employing a three 'part time' network team, creating a platform for artists to volunteer and supporting freelance artists to run thier own creative workshops.
Steps to get it done:
This is the first formal Havering artists network of this size to be created for a long time. Havering is an area of low cultural and arts engagement and therefore we often see that our artists 'create' and work in surrounding boroughs. The lockdown has definately shown us just how many creatives are living in Havering and are struggling to find a sense of belonging in our borough. Action needs to be taken now to show artists that Havering is a viable place to make art and be a creative industry, otherwise our borough will continue to be underserved the arts. The YAY Mates organising team is grassroots and volunteer led - it is made up of three collaborative art organisations based in Havering, Bluerskies Creatives, aBrennan & Burch, and The NO Collective. For companies wishing to 'officially sponsor' the group through making a large spacehive donation, please contact: firstname.lastname@example.org for the benefits of tiered sponsorship.
