Yatton Red Telephone Box restoration

Martin Gray By Martin Gray

The only red phone box in Yatton is currently decommissioned and unloved but i'm hoping to restore it and turn it into a mini book swap store.

The telephone box sits outside 'Through the Looking Glass' hairdressers on Yatton High Street. This used to be the Town Post Office and the owner of the hairdressers fought to keep the box after it was decommissioned.

Now the box remains empty and is starting to be vandalised. It's time to restore it and make it useful for the community once more.

What we'll deliver:

  • sand down box and repaint in currant red
  • replace the broken glass
  • clean the box and put up book shelves
  • add books, dvds and maybe even a plant swap crate underneath the shelving
  • add a community noticeboard within the box
  • possibly replace the 'telephone' signs for ones which read 'bookswap' or 'swapshop' in the same font.

Why it's a great idea:

These old red telephone boxes are part of our heritage, they are a British icon and with so many disappearing it needs to be used not abused.

Many other villages have succesfully restored and repurposed these telephone boxes as bookswaps.
It has a tudor crown above the door and so is between 60 -78 years old.

Steps to get it done:

  • buy paint and replacement glass online from an online red box specialist
  • clean and sand down the box myself and with volunteered help from people in the village
  • paint the outside myself and with help
  • create bespoke shelves to put up inside the box and mount to existing backboard - need help with this
  • get donations of books, dvd's and plants from villagers
