The Winter Festival will host a local winter market, an installed festival of lights along our streets, a cultural bazaar, and a community-led 'cultural exchange' project in which different religious and cultural groups will share how they celebrate the colder months with each other. This will be facilitated by local charity NW7 Hub working with producers and creatives from Barnet. The first annual Winter Festival will explore recreational and historical activities within Barnet for all communities for youth, families, and all to whom the wider community is important. Facilitators will guide a sharing of the different stories and traditions that are celebrated in our borough over winter, and help participants respond creatively to each other's sharing through drama, creative writing, song and dance. We will produce a book of what is shared over the course of the festival that will be gifted in hard copy to each participating community group and also made available online.

What we'll deliver:

  • Free Community Cultural events
  • Multi faith Ebook sharing recipes, dancing and stories
  • Year round community market place

Why it's a great idea:

Barnet is a beautiful snapshot of a multi cultural community with focus on Family and wellbeing. As society in the UK has faced several dividing challenges over the past few years we want to tackle these divisions head on and promote understanding, build bridges and celebrate our diversity. This will build confidence in our communities by promoting integration and understanding between the cultural groups here. Celebrating our differences together will not only lead to tolerance, but communication and friendship, raising Barnet’s profile as a welcoming, diverse and culturally significant area. This is much needed at a time when crime is on the rise, funding for social support for the most vulnerable is at a low and mental health is plummeting across our society. We have so much good to share and amplify through our heritage. Winter festivals are about light in darkness, and together we can share that hope across the UK.

Steps to get it done:

We will be working in partnership with a number of key stakeholders to deliver this event and create a lasting legacy for the community with the annual festival. Our partners will help us shape and deliver the festival and facilitate community ownership, empowering local creatives and stimulating the economy, proving opportunities for educational providers to participate and building new partnerships to make us grow stronger.
