Wincanton Sunday Market will bring a vibrant and buzzing environment for visitors and locals to meet trade and experience the local talent of the area within their weekend leisure time.

Wincanton needs a unique selling point, and not many other towns in south Somerset are open on a Sunday. In that sense, there would be no competition. Also, Sunday is a day when people don’t work and look to have a fun day out with the family, we wouldn't be competing against shopping for convenience”

“Our original plans for the Town have always focused on a market, as it has communities, businesses and local talent all culminating together in one buzzing environment. The overwhelming support for the Sunday market on our Facebook page and through talking to local residents has given us the determination to make this happen.”

The Town Team really hope to have support from local businesses and residents in the hope that they can see how this would have a long term benefit for Wincanton high street businesses.

What we'll deliver:

  • Employ local Market Manager to oversee logistics (6 month contract)
  • Local market trader incentive scheme to build popularity and retain business
  • Marketing and Advertising campaign (in conjunction with South Somerset District Council)
  • Procure Market stalls and equipment
  • Apply for Sunday trading licence and other relevant legal documentation
  • Apply to highways for partial road closure to allow market stalls down high street

Why it's a great idea:

Sunday Markets do not compete with usual working hours and take advantage of leisure time
A market is a way to combine local businesses, local residents and visitors for the good of the town
Encourage 'buying local' to keep the spend within the town (stalls would have a % of local businesses)
Provides a unique selling point for Wincanton and encourages repeat visits to the Town midweek

Steps to get it done:

  • Confirm local market traders and provide incentives - 6 months retention
  • Employ Market Project manager - end April 2013
  • Meeting set up with Frome Sunday Market organisers to share best practice - April 23rd
  • Application submitted for road closures/other paperwork - end April 2013
  • Drop in meeting for local consultation on 25th April in the Town Hall
  • Planning for additional parking - Utilising Wincanton existing facilities
  • Promotional and Marketing campaign for launch of Market
