Sunderland West End (situated on the Ford/Pennywell estates & South Hylton Village) intends to organise and promote a football tournament comprising of 6 teams playing in 2 leagues of three teams at Ford Community Football Hub with the objective of re-engaging with the community, also promote a reduction in isolation within a safe environment. Alongside this we aim to promote health and wellbeing by using the Ford Community hub facilities to hold an exhibition and provide information and conversations within the café/meeting area. We will also share what other teams West End have from Juniors to a women teams and how people can become involved The overall idea is to use football to encourage involvement in the local community from individuals and businesses, promote community links and to foster initial and long term relationships between clubs from various local areas and break down barriers.

What we'll deliver:

  • 6 team Football Tournament
  • Exhibition and promotion of health and wellbeing materials
  • Information on facilities and resources within the community
  • Reduction in isolation & promote community links
  • Promote local volunteering opportunities

Why it's a great idea:

Reduce social isolation and loneliness, allow people of all ages to join in a community event in a relaxed and safe environment, i.e. they can dip in and out of the days activities as the wish. We aim to help reconnect the community , improve mental health awareness, reduce social isolation and improve community links safely during and after the Covid 19 pandemic. We want to hold a successful and safe community event and promote the club and aspirations within the community at all levels and also promote the community facilities. Our long term is to establish the tournament annually and allow it to be self sustaining, and link it to the West Area event that takes place in Barnes Park. ( I have had a brief conversation with a member of the organisers about this. The inspiration behind this idea is the tournaments we have attended outside of Sunderland and also the success of the West Area event. This is the first time we have had facilities to hold an event like this in the West area.

Steps to get it done:

  • Request permission from Durham FA, Check and book the venue and match officials
  • Invite participants to the tournament organise the day and format of the tournament
  • Contact Health and wellbeing networks for displays and information leaflets
  • Start fundraising from individuals and businesses.
  • Check current Covid guidlines, Brief Volunteers and begin the tournament
  • Carry out evaluations what went well what could we do better next time?
