The mosaic circle will be created by a local, Wells-based mosaic artist and as well as being an inspired piece of permanent art for all to see, it will also be extremely practical for locals and visitors alike. The primary feature will be a map of central Wells, highlighting the main features of our beautiful city (and large enough to physically walk around on the mosaic itself) but the mosaic will also contain many other historical facts about Wells which will easily keep people busy for as long as they wish to stand reading it!

We estimate that it will take around half a million mosaic tiles to complete, so it is not a small undertaking, but the result will be absolutely spectacular and should actually draw visitors to Wells in its own right! It will be 6m in diameter (over 28m²) and robust enough to be treated just like any other part of the lawn.

Why it's a great idea:

Wells has nothing like this. We have a beautiful cathedral and moated palace but there isn't really anything else that you can't find in many other cities and towns around the UK. We need something striking like this to get people talking about Wells and get us on the map!
