We want to host a series of language and culture events for refugees and asylum seekers. We call the programme Walk and Talk.
Walk and Talk is a series of monthly events which aims for refugees and asylum seekers to develop their English as they get to know Liverpool’s best cultural attractions and each other. There are more museums and galleries in Liverpool than in any other UK city apart from London. Refugees and asylum seekers often don’t know about these amazing cultural spaces which are mostly free to enter. At each event, people come first to our college for a language class which introduces the cultural attraction we then go on to visit. For example, before a visit to the Walker Art Gallery, we match descriptions to paintings and practise saying what we like and don’t like. Once at the gallery we repeat the tasks with the exhibits there. As a college we have tons of experience in designing lessons and activities based on visits to our cathedrals, parks, museums and galleries. We want to use that to deliver a free monthly event that is fun, useful and inspiring to all who take part.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
Do you want to show some of the most isolated in society that Liverpool is a city with a heart? There has been a lot of recent spotlight put on Refugees and Asylum Seekers entering this country. The truth is, they are given as little as £5 a day to live on. If you put into perspective a return bus ticket in Liverpool is £4.40, that leaves them with very little opportunity to integrate. Our project will give Refugees and Asylum Seekers refunded travel journey to and from the event, a chance to meet people within the local community, an opportunity to enhance and practise their English and show them that in Liverpool they will never walk alone. We will also take them to see some of Liverpool's many cultural aspects including art galleries and museums. The project will help give these people a sense of the kindness and generosity that the people of Liverpool have and give them their first chance to integrate into our society,
Steps to get it done:
As BID Levy Payers, we are entitled to use one of our experiential sites across the city centre to promote our business for free twice a year. We plan to use these sites for awareness raising and fundraising for the Walk and Talk events. We will bring the project to a wider local audience by offering free language taster sessions to those who take part in our Walk and Talk quiz. The quiz will include questions on why asylum seekers choose the UK, what % of refugees world-wide are in the UK, how much they have to live on each day etc.
