In June 2019, Unitas opened its doors in the heart of Barnet to young people and has already become a social hub for over 6,500 members. Unitas is a fun and safe place for young people to spend their leisure time, inspiring young people to live healthier, happier, more aspirational lives. Our building facilities are state of the art, but our outdoor space remains uninspiring. We are undertaking a renovation of this outdoor space, to better serve Barnet's young people, and the wider community. Our members have given us a vision; a space where they can grow fruit and vegetables to support the food offer at the youth zone, alongside facilities for an outdoor catering space, and a flexible social area, that can be used for events, performances, and even oudoor film screenings! Every part of the redeisgn will support additional employability and apprenticeship opportunties for NEET young people, as well as create opportunities for Unitas to better support the wider community.

What we'll deliver:

  • Outdoor coffee bar
  • Raised beds for growing fruit and vegetables
  • An adaptable and inclusive outdoor event space
  • Lighting of the space
  • Unique artwork designed by young people
  • Outdoor furniture made from all recycled materials

Why it's a great idea:

Each aspect of the space will offer new employability and educational opportunities for young people. In particular, we would like to work with young people aged 16-19, who are not in employment, education, or training, to offer them training opportunities in areas such as horticulture, hospitatlity, and barista training, events management, and more. We also hope that we can offer some young people employment by creating new job opportunities linked to the space. Our wider membership with benefit in a variety of ways; the project will provide us with a vibrant and adaptable space for the team to run new activities not currently available at the youth zone as well as offer a safe and inspiring outdoor space that will better allow for social distancing, as we continue to navigate the difficult consequences of Covid-19. We also hope that this space can be used by the wider community as a local venue for local community groups to run their own events and meetings.

Steps to get it done:

  • Installation of raised beds for planting
  • The construction of an outdoor bar/catering area
  • Purchase of a coffee machine
  • Design of unqiue outdoor artwork to be displayed in the space
