Two Rivers Radio is a participatory community radio station, founded upon the principles of equality, diversity and accessibility. We aim to be as inclusive a group as possible and to be wholly reflective of the community in the city. Two Rivers Radio is an online only broadcaster although we have conducted RSL transmissions on FM and we have ambitions of acquiring a community FM licence. We have <40 volunteers that produce up to 44 hours of original, independent radio every month. Our team incudes Polish, French, Ethiopian and American volunteers. We also have volunteers from the LGBTQ community, the recovery community and our volunteers range from 19-63 years of age. Our content is as diverse as our volunteers; with programmes on topics including news and current affairs, to music & spoken word, environmental and social justice to UK Wrestling and local history. When we relaunch our USP will be speech radio, but we will continue to present excellent music programming as well.

What we'll deliver:

  • Quality Citizen Journalism
  • Volunteering Opportunities
  • Upskilling/Reskilling Opportunities
  • Confidence Bulding
  • Community Cohesion
  • A Community Hub
  • A Resource for Local Information/Sign-posting & Events

Why it's a great idea:

We passionately believe that volunteering in community radio brings about significant positive changes for individuals as well as the wider population. Producing and presenting a show each week, fortnight or month involves learning and/or developing a numerous skills including, planning, team-working, communication, research, writing, ICT and more. It increases confidence, self-esteem and wellbeing. Our community journalism will facilitate debate and discussion at an unprecedented time in our city's history and into the future. With the Covid-19 pandemic, the forthcoming Brexit cliff-edge, increasing racial tension and the rise of extreme politics it has never been clearer that a strong and robust community media sector will be vital to engaging and empowering communities. We hold regular socials and team-meetings to ensure that the organisation is run in as transparent a way as possible. This also gives our volunteers the opportunity to be actively involved with decision-making.

Steps to get it done:

  • Find suitable studio space
  • Acquire studio equipment
  • Build new TRR website
  • Install studio and test
  • Launch party

There are some significant groups in York that Two Rivers Radio would like to engage with. These include residents of the more deprived areas of the city, the traveller community and those that are in the process of re-settlement after homelessness, release from prison and more recently applicaitons for asylum. Further to this, York is becoming increasingly culturally diverse with over 70 non-English first languages spoken. Two Rivers Radio will provide a platform for these cultures to meet, mix and work together. We don't have a physical studio location, although that is what this funding will go towards. In 2017-19 we broadcast every Monday between midday-11pm from the Corner Pin public house. This was fantastic as it wholly reinforced another of TRR's core principles, which is that we are as much about creating a hub and a community for our volunteers (both on and off-air) as we are about providing fresh, unique and independent content for our listeners.
