Making music transforms lives – but only when people know where to find it! Our plan is to take music to where people are. We’re raising funds to create a Travelling Music Box, fill it with musical instruments, recording equipment and tailored musical experiences, and tour it around Worcestershire to young people in schools, playgrounds, skate parks, hospitals and more. The van can be booked for all sorts of public events. Different experiences may include: ukulele jams, record and perform your favourite song, become a DJ, join a samba band, or even play junk percussion! For those who develop an appetite for more, we can point them in the right direction for further musical adventures! We asked people what they thought - Worcester Royal Hospital thought it was 'a great idea!' Acorns Children's Hospice said 'we would definitely be interested' and a local District Council said 'your mobile van sounds great and you'd be welcome into the parks'. What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
Young people love music - but not all of them have the same opportunities to learn. At Severn Arts, we're all about bringing those opportunities to people - rather than waiting for them to find us! Our travelling music box will reach across Worcestershire - to playgrounds, rural schools, hospitals and shopping centres in disadvantaged areas to name just a few. We will deliver music sessions ourselves and in partnership. There's an appetite for this. The 'Tell me what you want' project in Bromsgrove recently looked at what would encourage people to take part in the arts. Arts activity on the doorstep (village halls, skateparks, local facilities) was one major answer! We know that engaging with music helps a range of life skills. The van will be travelling around whilst we launch our Bursary Scheme to make music lessons more affordable to families in need. So this will be a great way to get that first musical experience underway, with a professional and supportive facilitator.
Steps to get it done:
Once all pledges are in, if we meet our target, we will randomly select 5 pledgers to win a visit from the travelling music box! This could be to your school, play area, hospital, hospice or a nominated public place. After that, the van will be available for all sorts of bookable musical opportunities! Severn Arts loves to work with young people and help develop their creativity. Thanks to Emily Collard, Illustration student at the University of Worcester, for her beautiful illustration of Worcestershire's Travelling Music Box. Hello to all our backers. This is an exciting update for us as we are now ready for our Music Box to take to the road. Thanks to all of the donations we received from you the van we bought now looks amazing inside and out! Our wonderful new branding is fresh and striking and certainly eye catching, and the inside is ready and equipped for the traditional and digital music making sessions we have always planned. Our first booking is for the Worcester Show which is taking place on Sunday 15 August on Pitchcroft, Worcester – we will be experimenting with a range of drop-in multi-cultural music taster sessions throughout the day. So, if you are nearby, please drop in and say hello. We would be delighted to give you a tour and would love to hear what you think about the project so far.
Our Travelling Music Box crowdfunding campaign has won us an award! Really thrilled to announce that we have won a National Arts Fundraising School Emcee award 2020 - Best Digital / Online Fundraising Campaign 2020 – recognising SevernArts as one of the UK’s arts, culture and heritage sector’s fundraising successes! As you know, our Music Box project has been on hold for a few months due to Covid, but we have just started moving forward with our conversion plans again and have our fingers crossed for a Spring time launch. We will keep you updated as we progress.
Enabling everyone to imagine, fund & launch local projects that bring Worcestershire to life.
Hello to all our backers. I am writing to update you on the progress we have made with our Travelling Music Box, to which you so kindly pledged. Earlier this year, we found a suitable van to purchase, which will hold about 10 children and a facilitator at any one time. This used to be a local authority mobile computer bus so is already ply-lined, with disabled access, awning, and some fixtures. We have made great progress in specifying the conversion of the van to turn it into our Music Box, and we are planning the session offer - which will include traditional and digital music activities. We have draft designs for a livery, creating a colourful, welcoming sight. The next step will be to carry out the conversion and to start to deliver musical visits across Worcestershire. With the current situation caused by Covid-19, I am sure you will understand that we are not currently able to set immediate dates for delivery of sessions. We may also be delayed on the van conversion itself, depending on which conversion companies are operating at this time. We are very excited to be developing the Music Box - and pleased with the progress we have made - but please bear with us whilst we navigate this new landscape. As soon as we can, we will be rolling out the Music Box to bring musical participatory activity to a place near you. Thank you for your understanding and we do hope you are all keeping well and safe in these unprecedented times. Best wishes Severn Arts
