A public herb & tree garden in Toxteth

Toxteth residents can benefit from a public herb and fruit tree container garden. An area made up of diverse residents (old and young), we hope to make a positive social and environmental impact.

Toxteth Idea stage

Our local area is in dire need of renewal - we have people fly tipping furniture, overflowing bins, broken glass (small children play out on the street), rodents and litter. As residents we try our best to keep it clean but now we feel as if we need a bigger and brighter intervention that would make the area look nicer and hopefully as a result, be treated better. We propose to create a road side green space, with containers planted up with fruit trees and herb beds that any member of the public is free to help themselves to. We want to put out signs telling people what we've planted up and encourage people to take cuttings to grow at home. We hope this also encourages local residents to come outside and garden together on the street.

What we'll deliver:

  • At least 10 different varieties of fruit trees
  • A large variety of bee and butterfly friendly plants
  • 3 herb beds that the public are welcome to use

Why it's a great idea:

We hope that this project will brighten up the area and that the addition of trees and plants will combat air pollution. With the introduction of flowers, we hope to see the biodiversity of the area increase with more insects and birds. Finally, we hope this offers the residents and the general public who come through the area some respite from the surrounding busy roads, a chance to socialise, pick some fruit and herbs and spend some time immersed in greenery.

Steps to get it done:

  • Buying wood for planters and making them
  • Buying plants and trees
  • Buying and organising soil and compost deliveries
