Tottenham Marshes Bridge (TMB) is a key connection point to the marshes, but is also highly neglected; poor design & lack of investment have resulted in under-use & anti social behaviour (ASB). The Friends of TMB propose a vibrant mural, which will dramatically transform the entrance to the marshes and encourage the community to access one of Haringey's biggest natural green spaces. More people using the bridge will discourage ASB, creating a safer environment & acting as a catalyst further transformation and improvements. Tottenham artist/designer Lana Hughes was selected for this project through Bud Studio's 'Art for Haringey' Fund. Lana will create a large scale, colourful, friendly design using lettering & typography to welcome & guide you towards the beautiful marshes. Her idea is to transform this location into a safe & clean feeling space we would all enjoy walking through. This is the first step in trying to make this a beautiful and inviting crossing point to the marshes.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
- Highlight the access to the marshes which is currently unclear and unappealing - Encourage the community to access one of our biggest green spaces, essential for increased health and wellbeing - More footfall will make it a safer crossing point - Support local artists and expose the community to vibrant uplifting art - Transform a bleak industrial wall in a residential area that has suffered decades of neglect - Encourage new businesses within Rosebery Industrial Park, adjacent to the proposed mural site. Councillor Ruth Gordon said, ”The wall at the end of Carbuncle Passage is crying out for some love and I can’t think of anything better than to use it as a canvas for an artist’s work. It’s great that the community is getting together to make this project happen. It means we can take ownership of a dull corner with an artwork that draws us to the wonderful Tottenham marshes. It’s a fantastic. I’m definitely supporting it.”
Steps to get it done:
Bud Studio approached the Friends of TMB through their 'Art for Haringey' scheme, pairing locals artists with key sites in Tottenham. A small budget was assigned to our site & we wish to supplement this to create a larger more comprehensive artwork that will do justice to this large space. The Friends of TMB selected Tottenham based artist and designer Lana Hughes' work as it fitted with the issues of the bridge. Her work focusses on the art of lettering and typographic designs, brought to life with the focus and aim to inspire the viewer using positive & meaningful messages.
