The climate and ecological crisis has become part of conversation but what does this mean to people living in communities? What are the local solutions? The GreenWish is a pilot initiative by Extinction Rebellion Greenwich (XGR) that will pitch up in a public space for a few days at a time to up-skill members of the community and help them transform underused spaces into resident-led green oases and corridors. The GreenWish aims to instil a sense of hope, and offer an alternative quality of life. AIMS: • Learning space to inform, inspire and educate • Build resilient communities • Deliver art, craft, educational gardening & planting activities • Be welcoming and inclusive • Up-skill people to maintain flora, fauna and wildlife in Greenwich • Tell the truth about the ecological crisis and find local solutions
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
The climate and ecological crisis has become part of conversation following David Attenborough's #ClimateChangeTheFacts, the growing youth movement inspired by 16 year-old climate activist Greta Thunberg and Extinction Rebellion. In June 2019, Extinction Rebellion Greenwich organised a People’s Assembly on the Climate and Ecological Crisis. Participants shared ideas and solutions that could be implemented locally. Biodiversity was rated as a priority. Comments included - call for the council to employ an ecology/biodiversity officer to oversee the wellbeing of Greenwich’s green spaces, and help increase bio-diversity - better and clearer education to inform residents about key issues that affect their local area, biodiversity, including engaging young people on gardening, forest schools - opportunities for gorilla gardening The GreenWish is a response to these resident demanding help in the face of the climate and ecological emergency and a chance to work together.
Steps to get it done:
MPs agree that we need to ‘to restore nature on a massive scale to help stop climate breakdown’ as discussed in the recent Parliamentary debate following the Rewilding Britain petition. https://www.rewildingbritain.org.uk/blog/lets-restore-nature-parliamentary-debate
