Garvey Village motto is 'Let Us Prepare Today for Our Tomorrow'. In order to achieve this we intend to secure a building and transform it into a local community hub from where we offer a range of holistic services to inform, empower and entertain the local community. The services will provide a community solution to the challenges of youth crime & violence, reduce the disproportionate numbers of young people presenting with mental health challenges, healthy eating initiatives, well-being workshops, nutritional advice, alternative medicine remedies, exercise & fitness workshops, educational classes, intergenerational workshops and storytelling, film screenings, spoken word, poetry, song & dance. Additionally, an integral part of the hub will be to provide a space for micro-businesses and offer advice to startup social enterprises. The hub will aim to be self-sustaining by generating rental income from the 'managed workspace'.

What we'll deliver:

  • A local community building as a hub from which a range of holistic services are delivered.
  • Managed workspace for startup micro-social enterprises
  • Health, educational and entertainment services.

Why it's a great idea:

The Garvey Village is a great idea because it recognises and addresses the needs of the Afrikan Caribbean communities. We have received extensive feedback from the community and stallholders at the Afrikan Culture Market (ACM) that there is a desperate need for a permanent space for the family, old and younger members to come together to share, play, dine and learn.

Steps to get it done:

  • 1. Secure building by June 2020
  • Creating volunteer opportunities
  • Basic Skills training to create Jobs or own Business opportunities
  • Good Nutritional and Healthy lifestyle awareness

The ACM has operated in many areas over the last 5 years and the initiative of a community centre with a difference, the "go to place" providing options for the community 24/7. The Garvey Village is the opportunity for getting out of bed; for not wondering the streets; for not drinking or gambling. GV will stimulate, energise, personalise, support and enable community cohesion and growth. Through income generation and business initiatives GV will also stimulate economic growth into Catford.
