The Rainbow Spotlight was established because Daisy Major, founder and Artistic Director, was fed up with only ever seeing LGBTQ+ stories that told of an experience filled with misery, difficulty and rejection. In reality, that's not exactly the truth. Additionally, it is rarely LGBTQ+ people themselves that get to be involved in telling their own stories. As an organisation, we want to show that stories about LGBTQ+ don't necessarily have to be about that experience, that theatre can tell any story and have it be focussed around an LGBTQ+ character. There should be a wide and diverse range of stories being told because there is a wide and diverse range of stories being lived. We are crowdfunding in order to produce our 2021 series The Rainbow Spotlight. It features an entirely LGBTQ+ creative team. This past year has shown that more than ever, people value and need art and theatre. But we can only make it with your help.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
The benefits our project will bring are plentiful. For example, we will be platforming LGBTQ+ writers and directors, whom quite often struggle to get their work seen. Also, our project will engage with the LGBTQ+ community across the whole of the UK including those who would not usually engage with theatre as they feel excluded from the stories being told. We will also be educating those not only about LGBTQ+ people and their lives, but also about representation in theatre. We will be showing that you can have queer people in all manor of stories, not just ones about being gay.
