St Basils has been approached to bring back a much needed local community resource by re-opening The Pod Cafe. Although office areas remain in use, the cafe area was closed around two years ago, despite being very busy. We now have the exciting opportunity to throw open the doors to this fantastic community space; and whilst serving up good, affordable food to local people, this will also provide young people with the chance to achieve new skills and qualifications. Our funding aim is to employ a Cafe Manager, who will coordinate volunteering and work experience opportunities for young people living in our supported housing schemes and the wider community. We will work in partnership with training providers and employment skills agencies, to provide the potential for young people to gain real work experience alongside qualifications in catering and hospitality. We also aim to engage others in delivering pop-up advice shops, art and craft clubs, chat groups and talks/demonstrations.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
St Basils was approached by local Councillors to consider the opportunity of re-opening The Pod Cafe for the local community to enjoy the benefits of again. The cafe facilities were previously well used, by local people, community agencies and businesses wanting a relaxed environment for lunch and informal meetings. Unfortunately, staffing pressures of Bromsgrove District Housing Trust, who previously manned the cafe, forced closure. Councillors for local wards have acted on the demands of the community to re-open the cafe. For St Basils to have the opportunity to utilise this venture to also create training and work opportunities for young people, who have been challenged by homelessness in the area, is an incredible additional benefit; to that enjoyed by the wider community of having the facility available. Young people, who have been disadvantaged or experienced setbacks, will be provided a safe environment to adapt to the demands of employment and gain skills and qualifications.
Steps to get it done:
This funding will enable St Basils to realise this opportunity and work towards the cafe venture becoming self-financing, operating as a social enterprise.
