The People’s Carnival – a project celebrating the history of Rock Against Racism at and beyond Alexandra Palace. Inspired by the archives of Rock Against Racism Carnival Finale which was held at Alexandra Palace on 14th April 1979. We are working with Haringey Shed to activate and narrate stories relating to the Rock Against Racism tour through dance and costume workshops. These workshops will culminate in an immersive and interactive dance performance by participants from Haringey Shed’s performing arts groups. The performance will coincide with one or two nights of live music at the palace. The project in short will include: 1. One day workshop (Dance & Costume). 2. Self Portraiture photography of the participants (which will be archived) . 3. Live performance intervention coinciding with one or two music nights. 4. Visual RAR archive materials in the form of badges distributed to concert goers to raise awareness of RAR history,

What we'll deliver:

  • • Performance and costume workshops with young people from the local community engaged in performing arts.
  • • Portraits and documentation of the participant’s involvement which will go back into the Alexandra Palace Archive.
  • Performance Intervention at 1 or 2 concert nights.

Why it's a great idea:

- This is an event with three major institutions in London (Central Saint Martins, Alexandra Palace and Haringey Shed) celebrating the history of Rock Against Racism and use of the creative arts to break down social barriers and resist racism. -Unique Community Inclusive Engagement with minority groups in the Borough of Haringey: An opportunity for participants to develop contemporary dance skills and transform historical narratives into dance and costume. -Performance intervention will be presented to over 10,000 music fans: An exclusive opportunity for the participants. Steps to get it done: • Planning and Delivering a full day dance and costume workshop. • 1 or 2 evening performances in Alexandra Palace • Self portraiture photography of the participant’s involvement in the project which will go back into Alexandra Palace archive as a permanent record.

Steps to get it done:

  • Self portraitures of local communities building in Alexandra Palace archive
  • 1 evening performance in Alexandra Palace
