The Canvas Community Hub

Gossip Projects Limited By Gossip Projects Limited

The Canvas is a social enterprise in East London with a large space that we offer free to community groups to launch new ideas. But it has no window. And it needs a new floor. We want to transform it!

The Canvas Community Hub is a large room with an adjoining garden at the back of our vegan cafe on Hanbury Street, just off Brick Lane. It's specifically used as a free venue for groups and individuals with positive ideas that will improve the lives of others; we host a community choir, free mindfulness classes and yoga for families, a pro-feminist men's group, a book club for South Asian women, exhibition space for BAME artists and musicians. The space is just about adequate... but that's not good enough. We're providing a platform for the launch of new ideas that will improve our communities; it's not right that the space we offer should be just about adequate. The Hub needs a window, a new floor, improved lighting and heating. Better furniture, and white boards so our guests can brainstorm ideas. It needs love - which we can then give back to the communities we are supporting. What's stopping us transforming the space is money. Please help us transform the Community Hub!

What we'll deliver:

  • Window providing natural light to the Hub
  • New floor that's safer and more hygienic
  • Dimmable lighting to provide various lighting options
  • Heating for the winter months - it gets chilly in there!
  • Foldable furniture for meetings and performances
  • White boards around the space for brainstorming ideas

Why it's a great idea:

There are people all over London with fantastic ideas that will help others; people who want to give something back by running free classes, hosting free meet ups, starting campaigns and projects to make the world a better place. But where do they launch these ideas? In their living rooms? In a stuffy room at the top of a pub? The Canvas Community Hub is a central London space that is completely dedicated to being a platform to launch these positive ideas. And it's free! We don't charge for the space, because it's our mission as a social enterprise to enable the launch and growth of positivity at a grassroots level. The great news is that it works! We've enabled the launch of over 100 ideas to London, including the world's first Museum of Happiness! Currently, the Hub hosts a different event every single day: check out our events programme at There's room for growth too - with a makeover, and your help!

Steps to get it done:

  • Window made and installed
  • Lighting and heating installed
  • New floor purchased and fitted
  • Furniture and white boards installed

This project is enabled for overfunding. If the project hits its funding goal before the end of the campaign period, any extra funds raised will be spent (in order of priority) on: We'll use extra funds to create an online booking platform so Community Hub members who've used the space before can automatically book slots when they need them, making the process quicker and simpler for them and us. If there's still money leftover, we'll use that to extend the transformation of the space into the adjoining garden, to create a better seating area for those using the Hub and also our vegan cafe.
