We want to redesign an area of our school that will bring people together in a bid to improve lives. As a school, we are acutely aware of the need of health and well-being but fully recognising the sheer lack of resources, facilities and support available to the Benfleet community. We are offering to develop an area of our school to provide a purpose-built space where specialist teams are able to meet with children, adults and families to provide care and early intervention. Specialist teams would have access to a tranquil garden and sensory cabin that would be designed specifically with emotional security and physical safety in mind. We aim to reduce both the number of mental health requests and waiting time of referrals by providing a local facility that can be accessed all year round. A place that can be used to bring people together, to socialise and foster positive relationships so that communities can begin to help themselves.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
It is a known fact that the NHS is over-stretched and underfunded. As an educator, we are committed to trying to support and educate young people before concerns around mental health and well-being cause significant problems. The definition of 'reverie' is a safe and secure haven to retreat for pleasant thoughts that help you forget what you are doing or what is happening around you. As a school, we are acutely aware of the increasing number of referrals we are having to make; the unimaginable waiting time for children and families in crisis have to wait to be assessed and, when help finally arrives, the unsuitable 'hot seating' public spaces that our counsellors have to use to deliver their support!
Steps to get it done:
BATIC Counselling service does not have any permanent facilities in which to support the community of Benfleet. It is therefore unable to offer it's services all year round and has to deliver 'mobile' support during school time. We would be keen to offer this team a permanent, purpose built environment that is able to deliver support both in and out of term time; a space that can facilitate all forms of therapy, e.g. art and a location large enough for whole families to work together and to be able to deliver work shops, something they are currently unable to offer.
