Artist Maria Arceo began an ambitious project to highlight the problem of plastic pollution entering water environments: one of the most pressing and widespread global environmental concerns of our times – and yet one that could still be easily resolved or improved. Since September ‘16, Maria has been cleaning the foreshore along the tidal Thames, from Teddington up to the Sea, with the purpose of showcasing Londoners the real magnitude and environmental impact of plastic debris entering our rivers and ultimately our oceans. Tonnes of plastic are being collected and kept, which will be used for informative and interactive arts & science based events with the help of King's College London and Somerset House. We need your donation to help us raise enough funds to achieve Maria’s vision and create a truly impactful art installation for September 2017 - in order to showcase London's real plastic footprint on the Thames and advocate for change. Help us make the Thames plastic-free!
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
Recent research on plastic pollution in marine environments has gained momentum and produced large amounts of numerical data & facts. Did you know that: - Plastic waste constitutes approx. 90% of all ocean waste? - 80% of plastic waste in the oceans comes from land-based sources? - Rivers are one of the main channels transporting our city’s plastic waste onto the sea, including the Thames (300 tones per year)? These are overwhelming figures, however they're quite hard to visualise and engage with for all generations! With this project, Maria aims to help us visualise and quantify the real amounts and true impact of plastic pollution; whilst informing use about its scientific qualities and its main point of infiltration: street littering. This project is all about collaboration - everybody will be invited to our events and help the artist in this journey - aiming to make London an international example for change and civic collaboration towards a more sustainable future!
