Opening Swindon's Hub!

Swindon Hub By Swindon Hub

Bringing life back to Swindon - we are going to open a community hub, run by and for everyone who lives here. The old River Island store will become an open, creative and welcoming space for all.

We have just secured one of the nicest buildings in the Town Centre, with tons of space and ambitious plans to create a community & cultural hub. Our charitable objective is to create a welcoming, affordable and accessible space to meet, eat, talk, work, play, create, learn and share ideas & resources. The hub will be an inclusive community cultural space with a cafe, meeting & social spaces, a place where small businesses, community & cultural organisations can run activities and thrive. We plan to host a vibrant programme of events & activities, organised by and reflecting the mix of people in Swindon. From pop-up markets to film nights, from wellbeing events to environmental activities and gigs... whatever the community wants. It's a blank canvas to be filled.

What we'll deliver:

  • Create a safe, accessible and welcoming space for all
  • Provide a town-centre venue for Swindon creatives and voluntary groups
  • Offer affordable refreshments in our Hub cafe
  • Be a Hub for food share & a community kitchen
  • Offer great meeting space and hot desk facilities
  • Be a Hub for events, education and community activities

Why it's a great idea:

The Hub will empower people, promote co-operation, and build connections within the community to help make Swindon a better place for us all - we will contribute to health and wellbeing, as well as promoting sustainability and the environment. By providing a welcoming and accessible space for all communities in the heart of Swindon, the Swindon Hub will complement other initiatives to regenerate the town and bring footfall into the town centre. By involving volunteers and enabling new projects and groups to flourish, the Hub will generate lots of positive feeling about Swindon and its town centre. The Hub will also have small retail stands - available for start-ups, crafters and people with special needs. We aim to help people on the road to independence as well as making a contribution to the local economy.

Steps to get it done:

  • Bring everyone together - start the detailed planning with local people and community groups
  • Make building accessible - signage, customer lift and lighting.
  • Ensue health and safety standards in the building
  • Purchase materials, public liability insurance & music licence
  • Volunteer induction and setting up first events
  • Decorate and furnish public areas
  • Set up cafe & retail facilities
