Sunderland had been without a city Youth Choir for over 20 years. Last year Sunderland Music Hub recruited a group of Young Vocal Leaders to help us set up a new Youth Choir with young people's voices and opinions at the heart of it. The Youth Choir formed in December 2021. In the first week we recruited 33 young people and in just eight rehearsals together were able to perform on the brand new Fire Station stage. Participants have met new friends, grown in confidence and developed a sense of belonging through being part of this friendly, inclusive group. We are fundraising to sustain the Youth Choir over the next academic year, making sure that the children and young people who have joined us already can continue and that we can open the project out to more children across the city. What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
Singing is widely proven to have a range of health and wellbeing benefits. It helps us to create bonds with our fellow singers, it releases the 'feel good' chemicals in our brains to make us happier and it even has positive physical benefits on our lungs and bodies. The project will develop the wellbeing and resilience of our young singers and create a sense of belonging. Performance opportunities will support children to get out of their comfort zone, develop their independence and confidence. The project will provide free, accessible activity for young people from a range of backgrounds and needs. We are committed to ensuring the activity is free so that no child is unable to attend for financial reasons.
