Street 20 is an organisation that coaches cricket to young children. Our project is very much youth-led, and I, along with a partner of mine run the sessions. We are both ECB Level 2 coaches.
Recently, the money that we had with which we used to cover our costs ran out. This has meant that we have not been able to run our sessions.
This is a tremendous shame for my partner and I. We both have lived our whole lives in the area of Alum Rock, in Central Birmingham. Our cricket coaching was our way of giving back to our community. Our area is one that is very deprived, and we feel that, through our sessions, some of the kids, who would otherwise wander the streets, found a place where they could not only stay out of trouble, but also keep fit and healthy.
While we haven't done this yet, with funding, we hope to have guest speakers coming in, to give talks about the dangers of drugs, knife-carrying, etc, which are issues that are very much prevalent in our inner-city suburb, and will only go away through the education of young people.
