WEPT established in 2015, as a social enterprise, creating and administering projects that aim to promote women empowerment, training in the fashion and textile, and sustainability. We work with leading practitioners to provide a programme of activities, events and access to information that will help and encourage people to consider improvements in their lives, through skills and personal development and well-being that will lead to self - sustainability in the community.
We’re running this campaign to establish a permanent place to deliver our intergenerational creative education and skills training programmes for disadvantaged young people and adults in North Kensington. Our projects foster a collaborative, cultural exchange between creative practitioners and disadvantaged youth and adults. By doing so, we build self-confidence, tackle trauma, feelings of isolation and loneliness, provide pathways to further education and increase employability.
Situated in the heart of Portobello, STEPS ideally located in the community we work with and provide opportunities to run a range of community driven projects as well as our core programmes. STEPS will consist of fully equipped fashion design/creative studio including classrooms, multi-purpose art and craft room as well as an office and a project/exhibition space.
The building is currently disused but with your help we will transform it into a vibrant space for the community. Once a live music venue - The Venue previously called Acklam Hall was originally opened in 1989 by the Mean Fiddler with well-known artists such as Red-Hot Chilli Peppers, Eminem, Madonna, Jimmy Cliff, Snoop Dog and Van Morrison etc.. We want to breathe life back into the space and realise its potential. STEPS formed was by Danny Sekibo and Vanessa M’Boge 2017 to develop effective methods of intergenerational engagement through the creative crafts and arts. We are delivering these projects not just in recognition of the importance of sustained on the ground communication but also as direct contact with local people that have been identified as the critical point essential to engaging with youth & adults in the community. We're equally, taking a long-term strategic approach in connecting with these youth and adults that don’t have the opportunity to engage with mainstream and local youth services providers. This creative hub will support the creation of a new community based for the youth and adults as pathway.
