Help us turn neglected land full of weeds at stations in Islington into mini allotment so that local people on means tested benefits without a garden can grow their own food

We have no funding so help us get garden tools, giant waterbutt, veg seeds, herbs and fruit trees and van hire to collect free compost. The soil is contaminated and covered in rubble, so we're growing veg in garden waste bags filled with free compost from North London Waste Authority, which is made from council collections of food and garden waste.

What we'll deliver:

  • Buying 1000l waterbutts
  • Garden tools
  • Van hire to collect free compost from EcoPark Compost Hub

Why it's a great idea:

We're starting allotments in Islington, where the waiting list for allotments is decades long and the chances of getting an allotment in your lifetime are practically zero. The allotments will be for Islington residents on means tested benefits who don't have a garden. Benefit sanctions and benefit cuts have made it difficult to eat properly on benefit. Such as disabled people wrongly being assessed as fit for work and their benefits being reduced drastically; bedroom tax of about £35pw for a spare bedroom which people are having to pay out of their benefit; and having to pay part of the council out of their benefit. Our allotments will be built from recycled and reclaimed materials - free compost from North London Waste Authority made from the council's food and garden waste collections; chipped wood from when the council prune street trees; garden furniture made from reclaimed wood, and whatever we can find on freecycle.

Steps to get it done:

  • Buy garden tools
  • Buy giant waterbutts
  • Van hire to collect free compost
