Startup Brixton is an event led by Hatch, a community business incubator working in South London with a focus on supporting local businesses and startups. Hatch has been working with over 200 local entrepreneurs & startups in and around Brixton since 2014.
We’ve supported business and social entrepreneurs alike. Startup Brixton will showcase many of the Hatch Alumni we’ve worked with over the last 2 years.
Startup Brixton is a 1-day event held in the heart of Brixton @Pop Brixton & at the Impact Hub Brixton from 9am to 6pm, using all its available community spaces. The event will see inspirational speakers, workshops for budding entrepreneurs and those that have already started-up, we've got advice sessions, and for those brave enough, our own Dragon's Den where entrepreneurs can pitch their business ideas. Many local businesses have already given over £1000 worth in prices (co-working space, dinners, drinks, bike repairs), everything necessary for the budding entrepreneur!
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
Brixton has never had an event of such magnitude. We want to start something that's never been done before. We want to show that anything is possible despite austerity and local authority funding cuts.
We want to inspire, educate and motivate local people who are interested in starting a business or a social enterprise. We want to bring the local business community and our startups together, helped by other supporters who want to give something back.
Lambeth is experiencing drastic cuts to its overall budget and funding for events and other supporting initiatives no longer exists. To make matters worse, starting a business is hard. In fact, 9 out of 10 businesses will fail over a 3-year period, 50% will fail in the first 12 months without support.
With Startup Brixton we want to say that support is here, from ourselves, our partners and from the local community.
Steps to get it done:
Our ambition is to make Startup Brixton an annual event for more and more people to get involved and for it to be shaped by the needs of our local community and by the people who we're supporting, the next generation of entrepreneurs!
