West Ealing Business Improvement District (BID) is a non-for profit organisation representing the businesses in West Ealing to improve the area for the entire community to enjoy. We plan to convert an area of ignored outdoor space into a beautifully designed communal space, which harks back to West Ealing’s orchard history.

We will work in partnership with St James Church, West Ealing Centre Neighbourhood Forum, Cultivate London, Insight Academy and Oaklands Primary School and St Johns Primary. Our aim is to create an accessible space that the community can relax in; reduce anti-social behaviour by removing the planters and creating clear lines of sight; provide a performance space; soften and brighten up the area by using lighter materials and adding new green spaces.

We will invite the local business community, residents and key partners to provide their input into how the orchard should take shape and what they would like to see the space evolve into.

What we'll deliver:

  • Repave the area.
  • Build a raised "green" performance/art stage.
  • Providing built-in seating space and communal use areas to encourage residents to stop and relax.
  • Plant new ornamental fruit trees linking to West Ealing’s past.
  • Engage with local schools and Churches to encourage the use of the stage.
  • Encourage local businesses to volunteer their time to help complete the project.

Why it's a great idea:

The space we have chosen is currently an unused open space next to Broadway in West Ealing. It is largely unused area and when it is used it is often for unsavoury past times such as street drinking and drug dealing. By completing this project we hope to create a public space, which the whole community can enjoy, and one that is open to all.

The Orchard will be open to the public and through partnering with local businesses, schools, non-for profit organisations and residents associations we will endeavour to ensure that it is used as a place that all can relax in and enjoy.

Steps to get it done:

  • We will provide a dedicated and experienced project manager to oversee the work.
  • We will consult with all the stakeholders regularly to throughout the life of the project.
  • The community and all stakeholders will be asked for their input into the design of the orchard and its surroundings.
  • Professional architects will be engaged to provide drawings/visuals and advice.
  • Specialist landscape architects will be engaged to advise the project and deliver the orchard build.
  • Open meetings and consultations will be organised for the public to attend and provide feedback.
  • Seek out business partners willing to volunteer staff time to assist in the build and planting.
