This project is part of a larger construction scheme to return a miners pit wheel to Silksworth. The newly refurbished wheel requires community support to help towards the costs to install an attractive stepped surround to the base of the pit wheel providing residents with an opportunity to interpret and celebrate Silksworth's rich mining and heritage story. The wheel will be sited east of Silksworth Lane and work is underway to refurbish and restore the wheel before it is installed. The project will enhance the surrounding landscape and provide the local community with an opportunity to celebrate and commemorate the rich heritage story of Silksworth miners and the impact the industry had on the local community and their families. Creating an attractive seating area and raised stepped platform will ensure the wheel looks aesthetically pleasing and is accessible and attractive to residents for many years to come.

What we'll deliver:

  • Create an attractive stepped surround to enhance access to the pit wheel
  • Support the local community to take pride in their locality
  • Celebrate the rich mining heritage story of Silksworth miners and their families

Why it's a great idea:

The project - provides a positive and attractive addition to the existing landscape design scheme - Gives better access to the pit wheel and its surrounding landscape Re-establishes a sense of pride and place within the local area. - Celebrates and commemorates Silksworth mining industry - Better connects people, families, schools and community groups - Supports mental health and well being outcomes for Silksworth residents - Directly supporting City Plan and its priorities of Aging Well, Living Well

Steps to get it done:

  • Support Costs for creation of a stepped surround to pit wheel

The main focus of the wider project is to celebrate and commemorate mining heritage for the communities of Silksworth encouraging people to learn about their mining heritage through the reinstallation of Silksworth Pit Wheel. Silksworth Mining Industry was core in providing a livelihood to local families for over a 100 years. The Colliery closed in 1971 which impacted significantly on the local community being the main source of employment within the local area. The Silksworth Colliery pit wheel will be sensitively restored and reinstalled close to mining houses east of Silksworth Lane that were purpose built for the many mining families at that time. Silksworth has a resilient community with its residents proud of the place in which they live. The mining heritage story is important and should be acknowledged, preserved and celebrated. Silksworth Residents Association are proud to lead the project raising funds to help towards the construction of the stepped surround.
