Our dance troupe has been helping the community for over 37 years. We have introduced hundreds of children and adults to the world of competition dancing and have done so in Blacon for all of this time. We have used various halls in Blacon for dance practice such as the now closed Blacon Community Centre, Matthew Henry Chapel, The Adventure Playground Sports Hall and currently the Parade Enterprise Centre. We used the closed season {winter months} to teach and build new dance routines for the 4 teams we have within our group and then when the springtime comes we compete every Sunday in competition showing our hard work and determination to judging panels in the hope that we have success and bring home the trophies. We are the longest standing dance troupe in Blacon and the most successful also. Our troupe trainer has dedicated her whole life to not only teaching the children but also giving them life skills for the future.

What we'll deliver:

  • You will see more children off the streets by having a place to go for fun every week.
  • Blacon children doing better at school as an important part of the troupe is teaching basic skills.
  • We will continue to provide a safe space for children and adults.

Why it's a great idea:

Silhouettes Dance Troupe gives volunteers opportunities to gain practical experience working together towards a common goal therefore promoting teamwork. Members of the group also learn new skills such as basic customer service and numeracy skills as they volunteer to run a small tuck shop to raise funds. Those involved in training build partnerships with parents and learn how to manage children behaviour. Members also learn punctuality and reliability as practices for children and young people start at specific times and buses to competitions are early in the morning. As the dancers are part of a team they learn that other people are relying on them to turn up every week therefore promoting reliability. All these are transferable skills and give unemployed individuals opportunities to gain valuable experience which enhances there chances of gaining paid employment. Silhouettes Dance Troupe also provides opportunities for families as well as dancers to meet up and socialise.

Steps to get it done:

  • To locate a coach hire company to continuously provide a coach and/or driver
  • If we can, we would like to have our own coach fixed up and on the road before first competition in April 2023
  • To raise enough money to pay for our costume materials
  • To raise enough money to buy our whole team troupe wear such as a hoodie and t shirt

Family members come along to practice each week and attend competitions and weekends away. It brings together one parent families and older people who live alone who may otherwise be socially isolated. Our fundraising function and competitions are all family friendly and children are always welcome. Our troupe is built on an ethos of mutual respect and discipline as children follow rules and represent Blacon in a positive manner, these children and young people from Blacon are renowned for their outstanding behaviour both with the Dance Association and their competitors. This worthwhile hobby helps to keep children safe and prevents them from wandering the streets and getting into trouble.
